Final

Final Exam

After reading the report "How Teachers Are Using Technology at Home and in Their Classrooms" we were asked to do our own research.

The topic that came to mind is Technology in the Classroom.

  • How has technology improved classrooms?
  • Technology and classroom and improve*
Using EBSCOhost i searched: classroom and technology and improve*
  • I also limited the search to full text scholarly (peer reviewed) journals.
  • I expanded my search by applying related words and searching within the full text.
  • I found i needed to make more limitations.
    • I also eliminated all articles published before 2005.
    • I then narrowed it by geography to the United States.
After evaluating  "Technology In Today's Classroom: Are You A Tech-Savvy Teacher?" with ASPECT i found:
  • Authority (I find this to be the most important aspect)
    • I found out that the author ,Stephanie Diamond Hicks, doesn't have anything else published and is affiliated with Fyffe High School of Fyffe, AL. Although she is not listed in the schools staff directory. The publisher, Clearing House, publishes many scholarly journals across a global network. According to their website, which renames them Taylor & Francis Group, they are "Taylor & Francis Group publishes more than 1,700 journals and over 3,600 new books each year." They have been publishing out of London since 1798.
      • Although the author has not written anything else her ties to a school indicate personal experience and her well established publisher lends an air of credibility.
  • Sources (second most important)
    • There are 12 cited references for the article. 9 of which are other articles and 3 of which are books.
      • The references are relevant to the topic she is discussing and most likely good sources of information as they are in the same database i am using.
  • Purpose (this is my least important aspect because if i didn't like the purpose i wouldn't use it)
    • The article is directed at teachers to show the benefits of technology with encouraging tips to muddle through.
  • Evenness (this aspect is less important because if it didn't cover much i wouldn't use it)
    • covers the anti technology along with tech savvy perspective.
  • Coverage (an important aspect but i feel some of the aspects overlap and this is one)
    • The article covers plenty for my purposes and uses older sources only to borrow their wording.
  • Timeliness (very important aspect but searches make it easy to narrow to your criteria )
    • The article was published in September of 2011, So fairly recently.
  • Bottom Line
    • I found the source relevant, reliable, and thought provoking.
Review

The article talks about the struggle between the teachers who grew up with very little technology and thier students who were born with a computer at their fingertips. Many teachers are afraid that their lack of experience with technology would hinder their ability to govern the classroom if this weakness was exposed. This may be a problem in the school systems ability to give training to their staff that grows with the times. I have always found teachers of the northwest to be excited about the new tools technology provides, it would be a shame to miss those opportunities because of fear.
Later it demonstrates how technology may actually increase one's ability to multitask. Separating children into 2 different rooms, one with toys and one without, they had the different groups watch the same program. Despite the fact that the children with the toys did actively watch less of the program, tests show that they retained the same amount of information as the group without distracting stimuli. I personally love to watch Netflix while i nurture some of my Sims. This desire to be stimulated by multiple thing may make more traditional methods of teaching inefficient and obsolete.
The article goes on to demonstrate how technology in the class room can benefit everyone. Teachers can track and record far faster on a computer than with a pen and pencil. It also notes that Virginia schools that have 2 technology personnel for every 1000 students have shown an increase in standardized test scores. Teachers that allow students to demonstrate their technological know-how will most likely feel more like an asset to the classroom. I find this true for my self and i also learn more with hands on work.

Thanks,
Melissa

Web Pages

My First Web Page

My Thoughts

I found this exercise to be an eyeopener. Starting with a simple template and modifying a little bit at a time. It made webpage design seem like a breeze. I like how easy it is to view your design before it is uploaded to the web. I feel confident that with this foundation of knowledge i could create my own webpages. One day i may need to do this to give others access to my creations.

Thanks For All Of The Helpful Information,

Unit 9

Evaluating Information

Search Engine - Google

Search Strategy - I narrowed my search to the past year in order to get the most updated information.

Search Terms and Results

  • ("internet radio" OR webradio) (advertising OR commercial) site:.org

    • Citation - Jodie Griffin. Public Knowledge. The Internet Radio Fairness Act: What It Means for Radio, Musicians, and You. 6 Nov 2012.web.9 June 2013 <http://publicknowledge.org/blog/internet-radio-fairness-act-what-it-means>
    • Summary - Public Knowledge is a group run by attorney to protect the lay person's technological rights through education and events. The author, Jodie Griffith, has been a member of Public Knowledge for over three years before which she worked in the music industry. The article was posted at the end of last year. I believe this shows authority, purpose, and timeliness.

  • ("internet radio" OR webradio) (advertising OR commercial) site:.net

    • Citation  Theresa Adams. Oakland North. Growing Internet radio station Pandora plans for new Oakland jobs. 18 march 2013.web.9 June 2013 <http://oaklandnorth.net/2013/03/18/growing-internet-radio-station-pandora-plans-for-new-oakland-jobs/>
    • Summary - Oakland North is an offshoot of Berkeley University of California, a highly reputable and established university. The purpose of this article is to educate the public about Pandora, and how it has created jobs for the people of Oakland, something it does steadily. The article was posted earlier this year. I believe this shows authority, purpose, and timeliness.

    • ("internet radio" OR webradio) (advertising OR commercial) site:.gov

      • Citation - Bob Granath. NASA. Kennedy Kick-Start Program Encourages Innovation. 10 Aug 2012.web.9 June 2013 <http://www.nasa.gov/centers/kennedy/news/kick-start_competition.html>
      • Summary - The article describes new innovations NASA will be implementing including broadcasting mission audio over an internet radio stream. NASA is an obvious authority on things of scientific nature. The article was posted near the end of last year. The article describes the Kennedy Kick-Start Program's process of application, elimination and selection. I believe this shows authority, purpose, timeliness, and coverage.

    • ("internet radio" OR webradio) (advertising OR commercial) site:.mil

      • Citation - Department of Defense. Defense Information System Agency. DISA WORKING TO SECURE THE MOBILE ENTERPRISE. 9 Jan 2013.web.9 June 2013 <http://www.disa.mil/News/Stories/2013/mobile_enterprise/>
      • Summary - Although not a detailed selection this entry brings up intriguing questions about privacy safety while online. It claims that every time you access Pandora internet radio someone else accesses you GPS coordinates. It is written by the Department of Defense, a government agency that has protected us since 1947, It was written at the beginning of this year.  I believe this shows authority, purpose, and timeliness.

Best top domain for this topic - .org

    • They have wider range of relevant results.

Best Subject Directory for this topic - Gale Virtual Reference Library

    My Insights

    • I found this a most unique way of searching. The process seems to turn up very reputable sites faster. I think this would be especially helpful in researching government related topics. I don't know how often i'll use domain specific searches but i'm sure there will be times when it is invaluable.

    Unit 8

    Search Tools

    Search Tool - Hakia
I chose Hakia because i was intrigued by the way it is supposed to categorize results. I found this to be a trumped up tool, I don't believe i would use this in the future.

    Search Features
    1. Does not employ Boolean operators because they believe their Semantic Search is smarter.
    2. Handles synonyms in the correct context. Their website uses the example treat as in illness compared to treat as in trick or treat. Their search engine should only display the correct version based on the context of your search.
    3. Uses concept matching. They use the example, headache when searched brings up migraine as well.
    4. Highlights most relevant portions of retrieved site.
    5. Narrow results by credibility. Although when i did this the first entry was from Wikipedia.

    Meta Search Tool - Dogpile
I chose Dogpile because i had used it before but never really familiarized myself with it. I thought it was unique because of its white pages feature. I don't think i would use it much other than for a local search.

    Search Features
    1. Contains a local search option so that i can browse thing only in Vancouver, WA if i so choose.
    2. Explicit content filter. So that you can avoid all those unpleasant images.
    3. You can save your search settings for later to save time.
    4. You can search terms with inclusions or exclusions
    5. You can search to include or exclude domains as well.

    Subject Directory/Virtual Library - Intute
I chose Intute for its scholarly applications and insight into overseas activities. It was very easy to find the information i was looking for which was not the case for the other tools referenced in this blog. I also thought it was interesting that you could simply browse subjects. I found it well organized and would use it again except that it closed in July 2011.

    Search Features
    1. It does use some Boolean operators (or not and)
    2. It does use truncating but calls it a wildcard (*)
    3. All results have been evaluated for credibility.
    4. You can search a particular field (title, description or keywords).
    5. You can narrow results by subject area or resource type.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

    Unit 7

Types of Information: Focus on Periodicals

    Search Terms

    • (internet or web) and (advertising or commercial) and radio
      • limited the search to magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals.

    Articles

    1. Scholarly Journal
      • Harwood, Emily D. "Staying Afloat in the Internet Stream: How to Keep Web Radio from Drowning in Digital Copyright Royalties." Federal Communications Law Journal 56.3 (2004): 673-96. ProQuest. Web. 20 May 2013.
      • I chose this article because i hadn't come across many other references to the legal perspective. It is a scholarly journal because it is the official journal of the Federal Communications Bar Association. This association is comprised of attorneys and other professionals. Some articles are even written by members of congress. The articles are edited and proofread before publication. This article references the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) another good point for research.
    2. Popular Magazine
      • Donaldson, Sonya A. "LET THE (WEB) MUSIC PLAY; Despite Growing Audience, Fledgling Internet Radio Stations have a Tough, Uphill Battle." Black Enterprise 2003: 57-. ProQuest. Web. 20 May 2013 .
      • I chose this article because it was the most relevant to my search goals. It is a popular magazine that is published monthly. The flashy covers suggest an interest in profit over education. It articles do not appear to be reviewed and use non technical language.
    3. Newspaper
      • By, William M. "Radio Stations make Waves on the Web." Wall Street Journal: 0. Jul 23 1998. ProQuest. Web. 20 May 2013 .
      • I chose this article because the Wall Street Journal is a well known and reputable Newspaper. An older article it shows a slightly historical perspective on Internet radio. The article discusses the difficulties internet radio faced in terms of advertising profits and the threat internet radio possed to disc jockeys as they are unnecessary for internet radio. The article also lists a variety of internet radio stations to explore.

    Summing It Up

I started this units research by opening up both ProQuest and Academic Search Premier (EBSCOHOST). I was immediately drawn to the ProQuest search so i closed EBSCOHOST. I entered in my search terms and  limitations. I came up with 68617 results so i ordered them by most recent to least. Realizing this was showing me allot of recent but irrelevant articles with web in the citation i went back to relevant. I chose one relevant article from all the required types.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

    • Publisher- Springer a publishing company 170 years old with more than 150 published Nobel prize winners.
    • How does this search differ from the Channell Library?
    • this deep web tool was a bit clumsy in comparison. Feels more like Google searching where the other feels more like i'm at the library.

    My experience with IT Pro

    • IT Pro is an insightful deep web tool. I appreciate the many fields for additional conditions. I especially like that you can search by publisher. This would make using reputable sources much easier. I can't say that i understand the Boolean search but i'll have plenty of time to learn.
Via Google Books I found "The Radio Station: Broadcast, Satellite & Internet"
    • Search Terms
      • Internet and radio

      • Age-2012
      • Sources- the authors professional experience in the field seems qualification enough.
      • Author- according to his website has written over 20 electronic media books. Served as Chair of Education at the Museum of Broadcast Communications.
      • Publisher- CRC Press is a well established publisher of scientific material.
    Summing It Up
    • This experience has been quite informative. I find Google books to be the most user friendly and i will probably use it more often than anything else. If i felt i needed more control in the search i would probably use IT Pro. I enjoy the old fashioned aesthetics of the Channel Library search. I feel ready to gather information whatever my needs with all of these tools at my disposal.

    Unit 4: Types Of Information

    Questions
    Appropriate Sources

    Practice Questions
    1. Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
      • Medical journals would be the most useful source for questions about a diet's positive and negative effects.
    2. Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have their Cd's sold in target stores. Is this censorship?
      • I would use an encyclopedia of social studies to find what out what exactly the definition of censorship is as it could have many perspectives.
    3. How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over someone with a high school diploma?
      • Statistical reference books or web sites would be the best place to find that kind of comparative data or statistics.
    4. Should educators use commercial services to combat plagiarism?
      • I would check newspapers for popular opinion and then consult and academic encyclopedia for background info.
    5. Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global warming?
      • Scientific journals would be the most helpful with regard to new findings in the scientific community and then perhaps websites for environmental activists for their perspective.

    Research Questions from unit 3

    1. How has internet radio affected advertising?
    2. What does the future of internet radio hold?
    3. How has internet radio affected those abroad?
      • My most useful source was in the gale reference library. It describes how internet radio has helped reverse the isolation between Persian speaking countries.
        • Lewis, Franklin D. Petrsion Language and Literature. Encyclopedia of Islam and the muslim world. Ed. Richard C. Martin. Vol. 2. New York: Macmillan Reference USA, 2004. p522-529. COPYRIGHT 2004 Macmillan Reference USA, COPYRIGHT 2006 Gale

    Unit 3: Summary

    Summing It Up

I believe this unit has better prepared me for the research process. I prefer GVRL to Wikipedia as it contains far more reputable resources. I enjoy the search in GVRL it provides useful keyword suggestions. I also like the user friendly citations.  I think Iris is very handy i enjoy the handouts and librarian tips. I already employ the "mind map" method of jotting down ideas.

    Unit 2: Plagiarisim

    Plagiarism Or Not

    Hello Class,
Our assignment is to define 8 examples from http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/04/ as plagiarism or not and demonstrate how we would cite the information that is incorrect.

    Examples
    1. This Passage is correct. It is all personal experience and reflection so there would be nothing to cite.
    2. This passage rewords the Preamble to The Constitution so i believe that is fine because it falls under the category of common knowledge. Of course you may still want to cite the source if you are worried.
    3. This passage seems to refer to statistics not in evidence. I would show where this information is coming from.
    4. Despite the fact that this passage is rewritten it does not cite the source as it should.
    5. This passage is correct. It uses proper quotations and cites the source.
    6. This statement has quotations around it but has been partially reworded. I would use quotations only where the words are exactly the same.
    7. Seems to be personal experience and seems fine to me.
    8. Seems to refer to the constitution which is common knowledge so no citation necessary but couldn't hurt since common knowledge is debatable.

    Reflection

I have learned a great deal about plagiarism in this unit. I now know that punctuation in our citations will be judged by our teachers as way of determining our attention to detail. I did not realize that even my own graphics will need citation. I have learned that citing sources is important but that there are many helpful tools at my disposal. I will be using the book Rules For Writers seventh edition i purchased for English 101 to help me muddle through this process.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

    Blog Post Number 1 :)

    Success!

    My First Blog

    Hello Class :)
Our Assignment was to learn how to set up our own blog and then do so.I have found this tool most easy to use. It is much more efficient in terms of correction than putting pen to paper. Compared to Facebook I would say this is far more informative than intrusive.

However my cat found it quite exhausting to watch.

The aspects i enjoy most are:
    • The colors
    • The connectivity
    • The spell check (thank goodness)
    Thanks,
     Melissa
