Unit 5

Types of Information: Focus on Books

I found the e-book "
Web radio: radio production for Internet streaming" in the Channell Library quite helpful.

  • Search Terms
    •  internet and radio. I then added broadcasting.

    • Author- although the author doesn't have much info he received help from Staffordshire University during the writing process.
    • Publisher- Focal Press they have been in the publishing business for 70 years

While browsing the summit library i found a potential publication entitled "Embedded and Multimedia Computing Technology and Service: Emc 2012"

  • Publisher- Springer a publishing company 170 years old with more than 150 published Nobel prize winners.
  • How does this search differ from the Channell Library?
  • this deep web tool was a bit clumsy in comparison. Feels more like Google searching where the other feels more like i'm at the library.

My experience with IT Pro

  • IT Pro is an insightful deep web tool. I appreciate the many fields for additional conditions. I especially like that you can search by publisher. This would make using reputable sources much easier. I can't say that i understand the Boolean search but i'll have plenty of time to learn.
Via Google Books I found "The Radio Station: Broadcast, Satellite & Internet"
  • Search Terms
    • Internet and radio

  • ASAP
    • Age-2012
    • Sources- the authors professional experience in the field seems qualification enough.
    • Author- according to his website has written over 20 electronic media books. Served as Chair of Education at the Museum of Broadcast Communications.
    • Publisher- CRC Press is a well established publisher of scientific material.
Summing It Up
  • This experience has been quite informative. I find Google books to be the most user friendly and i will probably use it more often than anything else. If i felt i needed more control in the search i would probably use IT Pro. I enjoy the old fashioned aesthetics of the Channel Library search. I feel ready to gather information whatever my needs with all of these tools at my disposal.
Thanks,
Melissa

  1. Hi, Melissa:

Thank you for your thorough report. I'm glad you were able to find relevant books in each resource. It's pretty amazing how different the search interfaces are. You did a good job identifying the clues to trustworthiness. You won't necessarily have to do that for every book but it's a good way to see how to verify important elements.

    Cheers,
    Andrea
